Each unit in The Teaching Guide covers each Big Book and its related small books. The teaching unit progresses through the reading of the Big Book, a couple of spreads at a time. After reading the relevant pages of the Big Book, there is a link to the small book. Also supplied are a number of supporting activities which present the mathematical content in a variety of ways.
Each worksheet reinforces the mathematical content and provides students with a recording activity to write their responses. Ideas for active assessment are included at the end of the unit. Sight words and running records complete the assessment materials. The sigh word sheets can be copied and cut up for students to use in Bingo or Concentration type games. They could also be added to students' known word lists or into their personal dictionaries. Supply students with their own copies of the sheet so that they can colour each word as they learn it. Use the running records to assess individual student's reading of the text.
After reading the Big Book, students could break into small groups and move through a series of activities that might include some or all of the following:
- Doing a practical activity at a work centre
- Reading the Targeting Maths Literacy small book
- Working through a related activity on the Targeting Maths CD-ROM
- Completing the worksheet activity
- Completing the relevant page of their workbook
