The Harmony and Understanding series provides teachers and students with the opportunities to explore and experience a range of values. This Teaching Guide suggests activities that allow teachers to enhance their students' capacities of thinking and feeling in regards to values whiles providing studnets with time to reflect on and respond to the values held by various groups in our multicultural society. Empathy is encouraged through drama, art and music activities, as well as personal investigations.
Values that we accept intellectually come from basic beliefs that inhabit our reality. Harmony and Understanding provides experiences that are key to students committing to worthy values by allowing them to engage with, interact with and reflect on a broad range o multicultural views.
Each Teaching Guide provides the busy classroom teacher with background information for each individual reader, along with ideas and activities and ways to integrate other key learning areas. These ideas and activities suggest ways students could respond to each text on three different levels:
- Personally, encouraging students to express their own thoughts and ideas
- Creatively, encouraging students to build on and expland the concepts and content presented in each book in creative ways
- Critically, encouraging students to discuss and think about underlying values and issues.
Each Teaching Guide has an Overview that provides the classroom teacher with a table of the underlying values, suggested preparations, key words for discussion and Black Line Master content associated with each student reading book in that strand.
