Problem solving, inventiveness, higher-order thinking skills: these are all skills that we would like to see more of in our students. But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book Artrageous, Aunt Stella takes Sophie and Luke on an 'artrageous adventure' where the plan is to 'look, collect, draw and look some more' and come away inspired to create wonderful works of art. Luke randomly choose their destination with a well-aimed dart at the map and after a fast-paced game of 'Imagine This Imagine That' they arrive at Far Bay.
Aunt Stella encourages the children to use their 'art eyes' to pick up on 'patterns, shapes, and textures that our normal, everyday eyes don't see'. The three artists walk amongst the rock pools and explore the rock platforms, collecting shells, rock textures and pieces of flotsam.
The children use cardboard frames ('windows of inspiration's as Aunt Stella calls them) to focus their art eyes on specific scenes and discover that what each person sees, imagines and captures on paper is completely different.
Back home Sophie and Luke experiment with the materials, ideas and techniques they have learnt. Their paintings and sculptures so impress Aunt Stella that she includes their work in her next exhibition.
Problem solving, inventiveness, higher-order thinking skills: these are all skills that we would like to see more of in our students. But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book Boney Puzzle, Sophie and Luke want to enter the 'Clever Creators' competition but are stuck for an idea of what science exhibit they could make. While shifting boxes for Sophie's neighbour Mr Costa the children receive a visit from Nicholas Wilson (the 'world's biggest cheat' according to Luke) who brags of his planned entry: a mini rocket launch. Mr Costa then makes a suggestion - how about an exhibit that shows how whole dinosaurs are 'created' from fossil fragments by scientists and technicians.
Luke and Sophie are enthused by this original idea and visit the museum where they meet palaeontologist Erica Monroe. She takes them on a guided tour where they see fossils being unpacked and cleaned, fossil moulds constructed, the use of databases to search for matches to existing species and the way computers are used to make 'guesstimates' about skin colour, speed and even sounds.
The children work hard to make their exhibit and are rewarded when the judges award them (and Mr Costa) first prize. And Nicholas? His rocket has a teensy malfunction on the launch pad...

But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book Game Plan, cosmic creatures are Luke and Sophie's favourite toy and they are excited to receive a letter from the toy's 'brain brilliant' creator, Professor Flukelar. The letter is an invitation to spend the day at the professor's estate, and excitement quickly turns to amazement when they discover that he has his own roller coaster as well as a giant chess set.
The professor takes them on a tour of the toy hall where they learn about ancient games such as marbles, yoyo's, board games and modern toys such as Play-dough, frisbee's and Slinky's. The children ask the professor where he gets the ideas for his own inventions from and he explains the importance of asking 'what if'. He also shows them his Mix 'n' Match machine which he uses for generating ideas and associations between random objects, and he introduces them to the concept of making a prototype to test ideas on.
Returning home, Luke and Sophie then apply their new knowledge and skills to create, design, prototype and construct a toy for a toy invention assignment. Professor Flukelar's tuition pays off; their teacher Mr Todd considers both their toys to be 'wonderful creations'!

Problem solving, inventiveness, higher-order thinking skills: these are all skills that we would like to see more of in our students. But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book Look Out!, Luke and Sophie are working on a new invention: the Boomerang Ball. They're not having much luck though, as Luke's dog Gizmo keeps running off with it. Down at the park they accidentally throw the ball into a tree and are lucky enough to meet Erica Longly, an 'accidental' inventor. She shares her favourite 'accidental' recipe with them (Serendipity Surprise Crumble) and tells the children about different accidental inventions such as choc chip cookies, Post-It notes and stainless steel. Just as they leave, the Boomerang Ball falls from the tree and by the time they retrieve it, Gizmo has chewed it to pieces. But rather than be upset Luke and Sophie are inspired to create the Peeler Ball - a ball made with dogs in mind.

But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book Gadget Hero, Luke and Sophie are at the Gadget Fair looking for a suitable story for their school paper - a story that would make people curious about inventing. Before trying the stalls on the upper level they stop for a drink. there they find a woman placing a sign that reads 'THANKS HERO' on a vending machine. Enquiring about the sign, Sophie discovers the woman is Angela Richards, the president of the Hero Appreciation Society and the 'Hero' in questions is Hero of Alexandria; an ancient Greek inventor.
Sensing they may have found their story, Sophie and Luke make an appointment to find out more. Upstairs in the Hero Appreciation Society's hall the children view Hero's inventions including toys (such as toy theatre), fountains, surveying instruments and the aeolipile ('wind ball'); the world's first steam-powered engine. The children discover Hero worked at the museum in Alexandria where he taught maths and science. Miss Richards also tells them of Hero's notebooks, filled with ideas for inventions and tips on how to be a great inventor.
Back at school the children plant 'THANKS HERO' labels around the school and people are so curious about it that they sell every copy of the school paper. In recognition of their achievements Sophie and Luke are made life members of the Hero Appreciation Society.
Problem Solving, inventiveness, higher-order thinking skills: these are all skills hat we would like to see more of in our students. But more often than not, children believe that these skills exist only in the realm of talented, highly skilled professionals. Wonder Wits will make them think otherwise.
In the book What's Next?, Sophie and Luke are testing 'thinking caps' for the inventors at Future Industries when they're interrupted by a special delivery. The delivery is a set of wallet smart cards, and a touch on their tiny screens connects them to Dr Seevers, the head inventor. He has an invitation for the children to spend the night at the Tomorrow Lab and has sent a transportation pod (a robot car) to pick them up.
At Future Industries Sophie and Luke meet Ms Fullbright. They learn that she is a 'futurist' (a person who tries to predict what the future will be like by looking at what is going on in the world today) and they experience an invention based on her predictions: springbound joggers. She takes them on a tour of the Great Visionary Hall where they see ideas such as robots, floating cities and weather machines inspired by film-makers, artists and science-fiction writers.
But it's the Tomorrow Lab where things get really interesting. Greeted by two holographic 'helpers' Sophie and Luke experience 'ear-ins' (language translators), a holojector (a lesson helper), a virtual reality trainer and smart clothes (that clean themselves). They also try out a new version of the thinking caps: thinking specs that download information directly into your brain.
In the morning the children are invited to share their own ideas for the future. These include edible night glasses that make your body glow in the dark; the EyeMaxer, which gives users own eyes long-distance sight and night vision; and the exciting Cat-Nap, which restores memories while you sleep.

In the book Wonder Worlds, Harvey Barker, creator of the highly successful Unveiler of Stray World series, has just announced he isn't going to write any more episodes - and he's Sophie and Luke's favourite author! The children know they can't let this happen without a fight and a quick call to Sophie's Aunt Meg confirms their guess. HB has gone fishing.
The children surprise the author down by the river but this is nothing to the surprise he gets when the children pass on the news. Far from quitting, HB has simply decided he wants to share the writing of the series with other authors and a quick phone call fixes the misunderstanding.
In return for their help HB invites Luke and Sophie to help him with the next book. A quiet spot of fishing helps get the ideas flowing for a new Stray World book. Then, HB explains the process for creating an imaginary world. First you ask the what questions: What if?, What about?, What could?, What would? and What should?. Then you decide on the details and rules that make the world come to life. After a lot of planning and drafts episode 78
Zeke Wilson Unveils Roygbivia' is finally finished and published.
The book Spirit of the Incas explores music from the Andes.
My name is Rosamel and I am a musician. I play Incan music which comes from my homeland in South America. Music reflects our respect for the environment – from how we make our instruments to the songs we sing. In all my music, the spirit of the Incas lives on.
The Andes is one of the world's most spectacular mountain ranges. It stretches from the Caribbean shores of Colombia in the north-west of South America to Cape Horn at the southern tip of the continent. The book Games We Play is about the history of children's games. At our school, there are children from many different backgrounds, We all love playing games, so we decided to learn about the different games we play and where the games come from. Not only is learning about games a lot of fun, it is also a great way to learn about the other cultures in our school community.

Some children's games have been played for centuries. Swings existed on the island of Crete in 1600 BC and jacks (knucklebones) a game that involves tossing and then catching five or more jackstones, was played in ancient Greece. Both blindman's budd and a chase games, in which one teach chases another team depending on the toss of a coin or disk, date from 2 000 years ago.

Many games are remnants of ancient religious or mystic rituals. Hopscotch is related to myths of labyrinths and later came to symbolise the soul's journey from Earth to heaven. Another ritual involved batting an object into the air as many times as possible without letting it drop to the ground. This was said to determine the length of one's life.

Your gender - whether you identify yourself as a boy or a girl - is one of the most basic things that goes towards making you who you are. Depending on your family, your culture and your society, your gender might have a big influence on how you behave and how other people treat you.

Gender Identity explores issues from why parents buy different types of toys for boys and girls, to how the media represents gender.

You are special. You are one of a kind. There is no-one in the world like you. You have unique DNA, unique fingerprints and the iris of your eyes is like no-one else's. You have physical and emotional strengths and weaknesses and have grown up in an environment no-one else can copy.
The combination of these natural and environmental influences makes you unique. Don't let the media or other people tell you who you should be like or how you should look and act. Be yourself. You're unique.

Problems can get in the way, or sometimes you just don't know how to make friends.
Everyone faces these hurdles and copes with them in their own way. But most importantly, you need to get over them and continue the race!

Health and Understanding is a literacy-based series and interactive whiteboard program that helps teachers with these health issues during the last three years of primary school. The series provides teachers and students with the opportunity to explore a range of health topics that are involved in, and required for, a healthy lifestyle.
Written by experienced children’s authors including Hazel Edwards, Goldie Alexander, Alan Horsfield and Wendy St Germain, Health and Understanding is endorsed by the Centre for Hormone Research, a joint department of the Royal Children’s Hospital and Murdoch Children's Research Institute.
Who tells you how you should look? Who says you must be thin to be fashionable? Who says men must be all muscles! You are who you are. Thinking less about how you look and becoming more involved with friends, sports and activities, will keep you fit and stimulate your mind.

It is natural to want to feel cared for, and to care for others. We care for our families, our friends, even our pets! But what is a good relationship?
A good relationship is one where you feel safe and supported; where you enjoy the things you have in common and respect the differences. It may last a lifetime. It can get you through bad times as well as good. But not all relationship are positive. You need to recognise and act when peer pressure influences you to act in ways that make you feel uncomfortable.
Relationships explores some common types of relationships and how to make them stronger.

When you are a child, your family decides what you should eat and when. As you grow older, you get to make more choices about what you eat and what physical activity you do. You may even control whether you walk to school or catch a ride with a parent.
The people around you have a big impact on the choices you make. They may be your friends, music stars or celebrities. Sometimes this can be good - other times it can be bad. The choices you make as you grow into and through your teenage years may influence how healthy you are for the rest of you life.
Remember, you also influence other people's choices, so make responsible health choices whenever you can.

We all like to have fun and take risks – when we go on the sporting field or jump on an exciting ride at the carnival, for example. But there are other risks that can cause you severe physical or mental health problems, such as using drugs. Tobacco, alcohol and caffeine are all drugs. What risks do you face when you use these drugs?

Human bodies developed over thousands of years, as a result of the food which was available in the environment. If we eat too much modern food, such as processed and takeaway foods, then our health will suffer. Likewise, if we pollute the water, the air and the soil in which we grow our foods then our food will not be as good for us.
You can help through the foods you buy. Understanding the foods you buy and the foods you consume gives you the ability to make sensible decisions, that can also help protect the environment.

There are risks in everything that you do. It is up to you to keep control over your life. If you can't - you need help!

No matter who you are, your dietary and exercise needs change as you grow from a child to an adult and then into old age. There is no single diet or exercise routine for every age group. Your age is one factor that determines what you should eat and how much exercise you do.
But more importantly, what you eat and how you exercise while you are young will affect your health for the rest of your life. You cannot go back in time, but you can prepare your body for the future.

Your body is an amazing machine which grows, learns and adapts over time. Hard bones allow you to stand tall, while joints give you the flexibility to move. Muscles move you quickly or slowly and in different directions. You eat food and process it into energy while breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide. Your heart pumps blood around you body. All this happens and you don't even have to think about it. It is controlled by your brain.

Achieving optimal health involves more than your diet and physical fitness. You need mental fitness to cope with life's daily problems and stresses. You also need to learn how to relax and sleep soundly so your body can recuperate.

Physical activity, a positive mental attitude, the right food and even a good laugh are essential for optimal health - physical and mental.
