The Early stage texts aim to develop a childs knowledge of letter sound relationships and decoding skills. They build on the child’s core knowledge of high frequency words that they use to read and write.
The Early stage books include:
- longer and more complex sentence structures
- more variety in sentence patterns
- strong picture/text clues
- introduction of specialised vocabulary related to the topic
- more complex nonfiction features: captions, indexes and tables of contents
- introduction of graphic organisers – simple charts, graphic symbols, maps, picture glossaries
