This FREE-to-Download PDF is part of the Steve Parish Sharing Culture & Growing Up series.

The texts in the Sharing Culture & Growing Up series explore the enduring connections between Aboriginal peoples of Australia and the land they have inhabited for tens of thousands of years. Through individual stories and voices, these texts deliver authentic accounts of life in the regions they explore. They provide an exceptional opportunity for educators to integrate Aboriginal perspectives into their teaching, while still maintaining a strong link to curriculum objectives.

The Living Culture & Sharing Identity: Aboriginal Australia Teaching Guide contains 5 units relating to each text and 25 units in total. Each unit includes teaching ideas, curriculum links, a printable worksheet and graphic organisers. Lessons are divided into the five phases of the 5Es Learning Model, with a different learning process for each phase. The phases are as follows:

- Engage
- Explore
- Explain
- Elaborate
- Evaluate

As students progress through the learning cycle, they engage with all of the 5Es in varying degrees. This focused framework allows students to build on their knowledge and understanding of a topic by communicating, sharing, experiencing and connecting through a range of formats.

The units relate directly to the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science learning areas of the Australian Curriculum for Middle and Upper Primary students. They are organised into the following strands and sub-strands: History, Civics and Citizenship, Geography and Science as a Human Endeavour.

All of the activities target the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures and Sustainability. The content is approached through the conceptual framework of Identity and Living Communities; and the key concepts of Country/Place, Culture and People. Through these activities, students will gain insight into the community systems and traditions that have enabled Aboriginal peoples to live a life of balance with nature and maintain a continuous connection to country.
