Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Australian Animals Marsupials Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Minibeasts: Insects Spiders Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Australian States and Cities - Lower Primary
Most students have some understanding that many animals in Australia are found nowhere else in the world. This unit allows students to explore the reasons why one group of these animals, the amazing marsupials, which are born still in an embryonic state, are so special. Students will be encouraged to pursue research projects and to understand the complex world of animal and habitat adaptation. Students will study a variety of marsupial creatures in some detail.
Minibeasts are intriguing creatures with amazing features. In this unit, students will categorise minibeasts (insects and spiders) according to their features, compare and contrast them, and produce a report comparing two minibeasts. Students will use technical language associated with:
• the topic (such as thorax, abdomen, head, camouflage)
• the process of comparison (such as but, like, unlike, same, different)
• description (such as dry, old sticks; leaf with a nibbled edge)
Australia is a country of distinct geographical features and landmarks, both natural and built. This unit begins by giving students an understanding of the physical shape of the country of Australia and its divisions into states and territories. Students will develop an understanding of floral and faunal emblems, the Coat of Arms, state flags and recognisable landmarks. The unit concludes with students being asked to select criteria for the choice of a capital city and defend their point of view.
Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Australian Animals: Reptiles - Middle Primary Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Bush Tucker - Middle Primary Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Different Cultures in Australia: The Vietnamese - Middle Primary
Australia has more than 800 different species of reptile. They manage to survive in the harshest of environments, where few other creatures can. Australian reptiles include crocodiles, turtles, lizards and snakes. It is difficult for many students to have access to viewing a range of real (live) reptiles, so an excursion to a local wildlife park is an advantage to help students build their field of knowledge on the topic. Reptiles are relatively inactive during winter, so the best time to do this unit is in summer or late spring. The term ‘bush tucker’ is well known to most people, but the foods behind this slang phrase are, on the whole, a mystery to many Australians. When you come to know bush tucker more intimately, you also discover the deep affinity Indigenous Australians have for all living things around them and their high level of knowledge of the uses that can be sustainably made of these resources. This unit gives students an understanding of the vast range of foods to be found, their properties, taste, usage and importance. Students will also be introduced to some of the cultural meanings of the foods and the many rules that surrounded their gathering, cooking and eating. They will also consider what role these foods might play in modern life.
This topic deals specifically with aspects of the Vietnamese culture, brought to Australia by Vietnamese-born settlers who have found a new home within the diverse cultural framework of modern Australia. While the unit is a complete teaching resource, each focus area provides the opportunity for comparative study (or research) about other cultures. For example, the Vietnamese creation story can easily lead to a broader study of the myths, legends and folklore of other cultures, such as the traditional stories of Indigenous Australians. Similarly, learning about Vietnamese festivals invites a comparison with other festivals celebrated in Australia, and so on.
In addition to the teaching notes and work sheet activities, supplementary displays of pictures, charts, vocabulary and books about Vietnam (or other cultures, if comparisons are to be made) will create a rich classroom learning environment.
Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Aboriginal Culture - Upper Primary Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Australian Animals: Endangered and Feral - Upper Primary Downloadable pdf: Terrific Australian Topics - Democracy in Australia: Suffrage for Women and Indigenous Australians - Upper Primary
There is no single ‘Aboriginal culture’. This unit aims to give students an appreciation of significant differences between Aboriginal groups, the ‘simple yet complex’ rules that govern their day-to-day lives and the important role of art and song in recording their knowledge.
Due to the early separation of the ancient continent of Gondwana from the rest of the world, many species of our native animals have developed quite differently from those in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, these unique creatures are under threat, with many of them already extinct and even more critically endangered. This unit takes a close look at Australia’s endangered animals and the role played by introduced species in general, as well as those which have become feral. Students are encouraged to develop their research skills and to undertake investigations into issues affecting endangered animals, how introduced species are controlled and the role quarantine plays. The topic looks at exotic (introduced) animals, feral animals and endangered animals separately, as well as examining how they interact in particular ecosystems.
Suffrage for women and Indigenous Australians is a historical unit of work with a human rights perspective. It traces historical events from adult male suffrage in the first Australian elections to the eventual granting of full democratic voting rights for all Australian adults. In doing so, it examines changing social attitudes towards women and Indigenous Australians, as well as the rights of all Australians to participate fully in the democratic process.

The My Alphabet Kit Handbook is a comprehensive teacher resource book packed with exciting ideas to help students build sound awareness, discover letter - sound relationships and explore letter names and shapes.

The activities are presented in alphabetical order to make them easily accessible. Dip into the Hanbook and introduce the sounds/symbols according to the needs, experiences and interests of students; the themes or units of work being undertaken; and the aims and outcomes being worked towards in your own classroom.

Activities for each letter are presented on a double-page spread. The first page deals with the acquisition of phonemic awareness skills, the making of connections between the sounds and their visual representations, and ways of using these connections to decode unfamiliar text when reading. This will, in turn, lead to students being able to make generalisations about letter-sound relationships as an aid for writing. The second page provides a wealth of cross-curriculum activities which reinforce the letter-sound relationships under investigation. They provide opportunities to extend understanding in a meaningful way through oral and written activities.
