| Developing Literacy: Poetry is a series of three photocopiable activity books for primary school teachers. Each book provides a range of poetry activities that support the teaching of reading and writing skills at text, sentence and word levels.
The activities in Developing Literacy Upper Primary encourage children to:
- Develop their enjoyment of different kinds of poems, including classic poems, modern poetry, poems from different cultures and times and in different forms, such as sonnet, rap, elegy, ballad and concrete poem
- Develop their skills in analysing poetry
- Compare the styles of different poets (past and present) and the ways in which different poets write about the same themes
- Learn to recognise the influences of culture and experience on poets and to write about their own experiences
- Experiment with the effects created by words in different combinations
- Enjoy, investigate and create humour through word-play, ambiguity, rhyme and play on meanings
- Explore the quality of sounds produced by rhythm and different forms of rhyme and assonance
- Explore the use of similes, comparisons, metaphors and figurative language
- Use poems they have read as models for their own writing. |
