| Developing Literacy: Nonfiction is a series of seven photocopiable activity books for literacy development. Each book provides a range of nonfiction reading and writing activities, and supports the teaching of literacy skills at text, sentence and word levels.
The reading activities develop the children's study and research skills (reading for a purpose, understanding and interpreting, and making use of what they have read) and provide models on which they can base their own writing.
The writing activities concentrate on the purpose of a text, the audience for whom it is written and the context in which it is to be read, and encourage the children to be aware of these considerations when they write.
The activities in Developing Literacy: Nonfiction Year 4 reinforce word, text and sentence-level skills and encourage the children to:
- Differentiate between fiction and nonfiction texts
- Develop an awareness of the differences in style and purpose of fiction and nonfiction texts
- Use classification systems to locate books in libraries
- Summarise texts, identify the main points and key words and phrases
- Scan a printed or electronic text to find out what it is about, skim it to identify the main points and make simple records of information from it
- Write clear notes, in the briefest way possible, and organise them so that they can use them easily to inform their own writing
- Read and write reports, instructions, rules and letters for different purposes, and develop skills in matching style to audience, purpose and context
- Experiment with different ways of writing or presenting a text, including the use of ICT
- Develop an understanding of the features of different types of nonfiction texts and use them in their own writing
- Use layout features of nonfiction texts, such as arrows, lines and boxes
- Use and make alphabetically ordered texts. |
