Toad Boy July 4, 2013
Reviewer: Susannah Friis
As a parent, and as a former teacher aide, I know the angst in trying to get this age group to read. Grabbing, and maintaining, upper primary age children's interest is a skill few employ, and even less can sustain from beginning to end. Alison Peters uses language that engages and allows the reader to, not only feel an affinity with, but actually relate to Todd, the main character.
With multi layered life lessons, not only is Toad Boy educational, it's a ripping good story!

Toad Boy May 14, 2013
Reviewer: Fiona Bell from Cairns
Alison Peters has developed a story brimming with interesting themes and engaging characters, providing plenty of inspiration for teachers and students alike.  Young readers will relate to Todd, the gentle but determined protagonist, as he works through grief after his father's death, deals with bullying at school and navigates the ethical dilemma of a threatened species living right in the path of a new development. The main plot provides scope for teachers to investigate environmental themes around urban development, protection of our native species, and development of sustainable solutions. Furthermore, the subtle treatment of social issues such as grief, relationships and bullying invites teachers to explore these complex ideas in classroom settings. Readers will be taken on a touching, humorous and exciting ride, opening up opportunities for learning about life and our environment.
